History is not a static record of dates and names; it is a living narrative that reflects who we were, who we are, and how communities found their place in the American story. For Italian Americans, no figure embodies this more clearly than Christopher Columbus.
To generations of Italian Americans, Columbus is not celebrated simply as a navigator of the 15th century. He became an iconic symbol of acceptance at a time when Italian immigrants were among

in the United States. In the late 19th century, Italian Americans faced brutal discrimination, dehumanizing stereotypes, economic exclusion, and outright violence. The darkest example of this hatred occurred on March 14, 1891, when

           - an effort by the federal government to acknowledge the injustice done to Italian immigrants and to affirm their rightful place in American society. Columbus, an Italian-born historical figure already known in American history, became the symbolic bridge between a despised immigrant population and national recognition.

From that moment forward, Columbus represented something far larger than a single man. He came to symbolize

          belonging, dignity, and acceptance

for Italian Americans whose ancestors arrived with little more than hope and endured hostility to build better lives for their families. Columbus statues, monuments, and the Columbus Day holiday became tangible reminders that Italian Americans were no longer outsiders—that they were part of the American fabric.

Calls to remove Columbus statues or eliminate Columbus Day often overlook this critical historical context. Erasing symbols that carry profound meaning for a community, risks repeating a familiar pattern: silencing minority narratives in the name of modern judgment. For Italian Americans, the removal of Columbus is not experienced as historical correction - it is felt as a dismissal of their ancestors’ suffering and their hard-won acceptance.

Preserving Columbus statues and maintaining Columbus Day does not require denying history’s complexities. It requires recognizing that symbols evolve and that their meaning is shaped by those who embrace them. For Italian Americans, Columbus is a

cultural marker of survival, resilience, and recognition

in a country that once rejected them.

Defending Columbus as an Italian American symbol is ultimately about defending the right of communities to honor their own journeys—to remember the pain, the progress, and the moments when America finally said, you belong here.
That is why Columbus remains important. That is why his monuments matter. And that is why Columbus Day should continue to be preserved - not just as a holiday, but as a reminder of how far Italian Americans have come, and at what cost.

While Etna's eruptions are often characterized by strombolian explosions and lava effusion, the presence of a significant pyroclastic flow in this event adds to its uniqueness.

Taking meaningful action in your community isn’t about grand gestures or having unlimited resources—it’s about using what you have, where you are, to make a difference. Whether you’re passionate about social justice, access to healthcare, environmental sustainability, or education reform, the key is turning your beliefs into tangible steps that create lasting impact. Too often, people assume they need to be in a position of power to drive change, but history proves that grassroots efforts are the foundation of every major movement. The truth is, being a force for good starts with one simple decision: to show up and do the work.

Start by Educating Yourself and Others
Before you can truly make an impact, you need to understand

          the issues you care about

. This means going beyond social media headlines and digging into books, documentaries, and firsthand accounts of those affected. The more informed you are, the more effectively you can advocate for meaningful solutions rather than surface-level fixes. Education isn’t just personal—it’s communal. Sharing reliable information with friends, family, and neighbors can inspire others to get involved, creating a ripple effect of awareness and action.

Volunteer Where It Matters Most
One of the most direct ways to be a force for change is to give your time to organizations doing the work on the ground.

Every cause needs people willing to step up

, whether that means serving meals at a shelter, tutoring students, or participating in environmental clean-ups. Volunteering not only provides immediate support to those in need, but it also connects you to a network of like-minded individuals who share your passion. Beyond that, it offers firsthand insight into the struggles and challenges of your community, making your advocacy more informed and personal.

Use Your Skills to Contribute in Unique Ways
You don’t have to fit into a traditional activist mold to make a difference—your unique skills can be a powerful tool for change. Healthcare professionals, for example, play a crucial role in strengthening their communities by providing quality care and advocating for better public health. If you’re a nurse, earning an

degree allows you to enhance your expertise and improve patient outcomes—all while continuing to serve your community. Whether you’re a writer amplifying unheard voices, a tech expert building platforms for social good, or a nurse deepening your impact through education, the key is identifying where your talents align with community needs and applying them with intention.

Support Local Businesses and Initiatives

          Where you spend your money

is a direct reflection of your values. Supporting businesses owned by marginalized communities, purchasing from ethical sources, and investing in local initiatives can reshape the economic landscape of your neighborhood. Large-scale change often starts with small shifts in daily habits—choosing to shop at a community bookstore instead of a corporate giant, for instance, keeps resources within your neighborhood. When you put your money behind the causes you believe in, you create demand for ethical and sustainable practices.

Engage in Policy and Advocacy Work
Change isn’t just about grassroots action; it’s also about shaping the policies that govern your community. Many people underestimate their power when it comes to influencing local decisions, but city council meetings, school board discussions, and state legislatures are accessible to those willing to participate. Calling representatives, signing petitions, and even running for local office can

          amplify your voice

in ways that individual actions alone cannot. Even if you don’t consider yourself a “political person,” policies shape everyday life—getting involved ensures that your community’s needs are represented.

Create and Strengthen Community Networks
No one drives change alone. Building relationships with others who share your passion makes your efforts more effective and sustainable. Hosting community meetings, joining local action groups, or even starting conversations with neighbors can

create a collective force for progress

. Collaboration allows for resource-sharing, fresh ideas, and a stronger sense of unity, which can sustain long-term activism. The stronger your community bonds are, the more resilient you’ll be in facing challenges together.

Commit to Long-Term, Consistent Action
Sporadic activism, while valuable, doesn’t create the lasting change that communities need. Real impact comes from consistency—showing up even when the excitement fades and progress seems slow. Whether it’s continuing to volunteer, donating regularly, or checking in with policymakers, long-term commitment is what transforms temporary efforts into lasting improvements. Change is rarely instant, but

persistence ensures that the work continues

beyond a single event or movement.

Every action you take in your community is a step toward a brighter future. By choosing to engage, advocate, and contribute, you become a catalyst for change, inspiring others to follow suit. Your efforts weave a tapestry of resilience and hope. As you continue to invest in your community, you help create a legacy of empowerment and progress that will benefit generations to come.

New Year’s Eve in Italy, or La Festa di San Silvestro, is nothing short of magical. The night brims with traditions that mix old superstitions, family warmth, and festive fun. Here’s a peek into how Italians say “arrivederci” to the old year and “ciao” to the new!

isn’t just for fashion—it’s a time-honored Italian tradition believed to bring good fortune and romance in the coming year. So, if you’re in Italy on December 31st, don’t be surprised to see lingerie stores showcasing a sea of red in their displays.
The centerpiece of the evening is, of course, the feast. Italians sit down to a lavish dinner. Lentils, symbolizing wealth and prosperity (they resemble coins, after all), are a must. Pair them with

          Out with the Old
In some regions, people literally throw the old year out—by

          tossing unwanted items

out of their windows! While this tradition is fading (and might not be great for the car below), it’s a reminder to start fresh and leave negativity behind.

Fireworks and Prosecco
No Italian New Year’s celebration is complete without

          fireworks

lighting up the night sky. As the clock strikes midnight, glasses of bubbly Prosecco are raised high, and the joyous shouts of “Buon Anno!” echo in the streets.

Whether it’s through feasting, fireworks, or some lucky red undies, Italians know how to welcome the new year with style, love, and a sprinkle of superstition.

They invite other groups and communities to join as well to create a broad alliance to oppose cancel culture. When most people hear the words – civil rights - the very last group that comes to mind is Italian Americans. Most people see us as an example of an ethnic group that made a very successful assimilation into American society. It is true that we have made great strides since our ancestors first arrived on these shores, but this is only because we had advocates in our community that fought hard for our civil rights. We cannot forget that our ancestors

          were met with great hostility

when it came to employment, housing, education and almost every other area. Many times, these hostilities were acts of violence such as lynchings. We can never forget

          the largest mass lynching

in the United States occurred in New Orleans where 11 innocent Italian American men were lynched for a crime they didn't commit. This does not include many others who also perished on that same day, as well as many other lynchings in other cities.

The Right to Celebrate Our Heritage
Today, we have a different kind of civil rights battle occurring right before our eyes. It is a civil rights battle for the right to celebrate our heritage without undue interference from radical government officials. This is a right every other ethnic group in America has except us. We are either free or we are not, we have equality, or we don't, we either have civil rights or live in a dictatorship.

There is no such thing as being a little free, no such thing as being a little equal. But that is where we stand today. We see evidence of this all over the country, from California to Massachusetts, and even New York! Governors, Mayors, City Councils and school districts are using government power to strip our civil rights.

          Renaming Columbus Day

to another ethnic holiday or any other holiday is institutional discrimination and we need to put an end to this antidiverse movement. These politicians are acting under the color of law to target our culture and heritage and it's about time we start fighting for our civil rights, our right to liberty and our right to be treated equally.

Are We Really Free?
The very definition of liberty according to Oxford is “The state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behavior, or political views”. If Columbus Day is a celebration of Italian American heritage, and government officials use their power to rename or eliminate it, are we really free? We have a fundamental liberty interest to celebrate our ethnic culture the way we see fit. The way we have done so for over 100 years. So, I ask you this question again...Do Italian Americans have liberty? The correct answer is NO! How can we have liberty if government is dictating what we can and can't celebrate, what we can and can't name the holiday. This is depriving us of our right to liberty, our right to equality and the only way to stop it is to have a civil rights movement across the country. But we can only have a movement if our community knows their civil rights.

This is a crucial point you should understand and consider. How many know that we are a protected class covered under the

           equal protection clause?

A Protected Class...
Our research indicates this has been the case since at least the 1980s. According to several cases, “Italian Americans” are "recognizable" and "distinct," and appear to have been "singled out for different treatment under the laws, as written or applied." Castaneda v. Partida, 430 U.S. 482, 494, 97 S. Ct. 1272, 1280, 51 L. Ed. 2d 498 (1977):
“Italian Americans share a common ancestry in Italy, a common cultural and religious heritage there and here, and they often still share a common language. They are identifiable, in part, by their characteristic last names.”
“The court takes judicial notice that Italian Americans are considered in this district to be a recognizable and distinct ethnic group, commonly identified by their last names and by their neighborhoods. These qualities are sufficient to render Italian Americans no less cognizable than the other groups who have already been recognized as cognizable for equal protection purposes.”
“Italian Americans are also shielded by the equal protection clause's prohibition against discrimination on the basis of ancestry”
“It can therefore be confidently concluded that the Court meant ‘cognizable racial groups’ to include a variety of ethnic and ancestral groups subject to intentional discrimination, including Italian Americans.”

There are a number of locales across the country that have replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day. The primary reason is due to fabricated facts and falsehoods perpetrated by Howard Zinn. He was a self-declared Marxist and anarchist who hated our great country. He published a textbook in 1980 that totally distorted the facts about Columbus and our founding fathers in his goal to denigrate Western culture. Well, his efforts did bear fruit, with generations who have been brainwashed with these false facts that have been totally

In 1892, then President Benjamin Harrison declared that the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ arrival in the new world be celebrated as Columbus Day to counter the negative treatment of Italian Americans so prevalent in those times. Later it was declared a Federal Holiday, as it remains today. And, now, finally, one State has done the right thing and officially recognized, by state law, that Columbus Day is preserved in New Hampshire.

, often defined as the practice of withdrawing support for public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable, has greatly expanded its reach to include the reevaluation and erasure of historical symbols, figures, and traditions. For Italian Americans and Native Americans, this phenomenon has led to the removal of culturally significant symbols and observances, such as Columbus Day and the names of sports teams like the Redskins.

Columbus Day is a critical point of pride for Italian Americans. For many Italian Americans,

in New Orleans and other lynchings during that period. The movement to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day has been seen by some as an attempt to erase this significant part of their cultural identity. While it is essential to acknowledge and respect the history and suffering of Native Americans, many Italian Americans feel that the outright cancellation of Columbus Day negates their heritage and contributions. Through this new alliance, NAGA agrees that Columbus Day should not be eliminated.

Similarly, Native Americans have faced the removal or renaming of symbols and mascots that have been part of the American lexicon and sports culture for decades. One of the most notable examples is the change of the Washington Redskins' name. For many Native Americans, the name

and other similar symbols are not derogatory terms but foster a sense of pride and recognition. The removal of these symbols, often decided without comprehensive consultation with the greater Native American population, is perceived as an erasure of their presence and influence in American history and society. And, IAOVC supports NAGA in the pursuit of maintaining these culturally important symbols of Native Americans.

The alliance between IAOVC and NAGA is significant for several reasons. First, it brings together two communities that have historically had limited interaction, fostering a sense of unity and mutual support. By joining forces, these groups can amplify their voices, making it clear that cultural heritage and identity are not issues to be handled unilaterally by external forces but require the input and agreement of the communities involved.

Second, this alliance highlights the importance of dialogue and understanding. Both organizations recognize the need to educate the broader public about the significance of their cultural symbols and the reasons they should be preserved.

Lastly, this partnership sets a precedent for other cultural and ethnic groups facing similar challenges. It demonstrates that unity and collaboration can be powerful tools in advocating for the preservation of cultural identity in the face of a growing trend towards cancel culture. By working together, marginalized communities can ensure their voices are heard and their histories are honored.

The alliance between the Italian American One Voice Coalition and the Native American Guardians Association is a crucial development in the ongoing debate over cancel culture. It emphasizes the importance of preserving cultural heritage, promotes dialogue and understanding, and sets an example for other groups facing similar challenges. This collaboration is not just about opposing cancel culture but about advocating for a more inclusive and respectful approach to cultural representation and history. Being proactive, informed, and well-prepared can be the key differentiators between success and stumbling blocks. A rigorous research phase and a solid preparation strategy can significantly enhance the probability of your business's success. In this article,

Start by Researching Regulations
Each municipality, whether it's a quaint town or bustling city, establishes its distinct rules and directives designed specifically for businesses operating within its boundaries. Diligently acquainting yourself with these regulations is paramount, as they serve as the foundational pillars for any business endeavor.
By grasping the nuances of local ordinances, zoning regulations, and industry-related directives, entrepreneurs ensure that their business functions legally and aligns seamlessly with the standards and aspirations of the community.

          Get Necessary Licenses and Permits
Before opening the doors of a local business, one must secure the essential licenses and permits. This process, although seemingly bureaucratic, is crucial in legitimizing operations. From health department permits to sales tax licenses, ensure

Put Great Thought Into Your Location
A business's location serves as a beacon, influencing its prominence and ease of access for potential customers. In the decision-making process for choosing the ideal spot, entrepreneurs must weigh elements like the volume of pedestrian movement, adjacency to complementary businesses, the availability of parking facilities, and the characteristics of the nearby population.Securing a location that harmoniously aligns with the business's model and intended audience

          Introduction
IAOVC maintains an active schedule throughout the year in support of its mission. After the passing of its founder and president, Dr. Manny Alfano in 2022, a dinner was held to commemorate IAOVC’s 30th Anniversary and as a memorial to Dr. Alfano. A new slate of officers took the helm and the Board committed to continuing the mission of IAOVC. Below are some selected highlights of the activities of IAOVC in 2023. Dr. Alfano’s newsletter, The Alfano Digest, was resumed, thanks to IAOVC VP Frank Lorenzo.

          November – 2023 – National
IAOVC launched opposition to US Senate Bill S-2970, sponsored by 13 Senators seeking to eliminate Columbus Day and replace it with Indigenous Peoples Day. IAOVC held an emergency video meeting with organizations across the country to begin a phone campaign seeking to have the Bill defeated.
Again this year, IAOVC launched a vigorous media outreach campaign to preempt the annual attacks that occur against Columbus Day. IAOVC’s new President, Andre’ DiMino, made numerous TV, radio, and podcast appearances to dispute the false allegations against Columbus and defend Italian American civil rights. These included TV interviews on Fox News Live and Currents News. Radio interviews on the syndicated Simon Conway Show WHO 1040 Iowa; Len Berman & Michael Reidel Show WOR 710 NYC; Debbie Nigro Show WGCH 1490 CT; The Columbus Day Special WRMI, FL; and, The Drew Mariani international podcast. In addition, DiMino was the TV guest host of the Morris County Columbus Day Parade.

Residents contacted IAOVC about a proposed bill to eliminate Columbus Day to replace it with Indigenous Peoples Day. IAOVC launched a campaign to contact local officials. IAOVC advised that Columbus is an iconic symbol to Italian Americans; provided facts disputing the false narrative about Columbus; informed that August 9 is International Indigenous Peoples Day, as declared by the UN; advised that Italian Americans are a cognizable group under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution; and, warned that placing one group over another is discrimination, violating Italian American civil rights. The campaign was successful – the vote preserved Columbus Day and declared August 9 as Indigenous Peoples Day in that city.
IAOVC was contacted about a popular radio host on KSHE who made a disparaging on-air stereotype about Italian American women. Andre’ DiMino, IAOVC President contacted management of KSHE and CEO of its corporate owner, Hubbard Radio. He advised that such a blatant stereotype should not be broadcast; it is unacceptable; and, should be publicly retracted with an on-air apology. IAOVC was pleased to receive a response from the CEO and management that they agreed this was unacceptable and would address the matter. The radio host was apologetic and issued that on-air apology. IAOVC commended them for doing the right thing.
As a result of continued filing of responses and briefs to the federal court, IAOVC received notification that its landmark federal suit against West Orange, NJ for removing the Columbus monument moved a step closer to success. The Federal court finally declared that IAOVC had standing to sue on behalf of its members. IAOVC filed the federal suit in September of 2020 through the efforts of IAOVC members and a team of attorneys. They joined together to take this legal stand on behalf of Italian Americans who endured widespread destruction and removal of Columbus statues and monuments around the country.
Due to a concerted effort by IAOVC coordinating other organizations in the effort, the Toms River School District issued its 2023-2024 school calendar with Columbus Day preserved. It was planned to be eliminated for the new school year. IAOVC launched extensive PR, social media and email campaigns in opposition. IAOVC members attended school board meetings and made public statements on the official record opposing the elimination of Columbus Day. When the new school calendar was issued with Columbus Day preserved, IAOVC issued a public statement thanking the school board.

Running a nonprofit takes a great deal of effort and dedication. Often, we can find ourselves running on an endless treadmill of work with little time to take a step back and reflect on what we’re doing. There are many great apps that you can use to organize your essential tasks, manage your time, and keep track of your business. Here are a few recommendations, courtesy of the

A Tale of Two Christmases: Italian American Traditions vs. Italian Festivities

Christmas, a season of joy, family, and traditions, is celebrated with unique flair around the world. Let's explore the enchanting differences between how Italian Americans and Italians in Italy celebrate this festive occasion.
Italian Americans, deeply rooted in their immigrant history, have fused their cultural heritage with the American way of life, creating a distinct Christmas celebration. The holiday season often kicks off with grandiose decorations, where homes are adorned with twinkling lights, wreaths, and nativity scenes. The aroma of Italian-American kitchens is filled with the rich scents of holiday delicacies like panettone, cannoli, and struffoli, passed down through generations.
Christmas Eve, known as La Vigilia, is a cherished Italian-American tradition. Families gather for the Feast of the Seven Fishes, a seafood-centric meal symbolizing the wait for the midnight birth of Jesus. It's a night filled with laughter, love, and the sharing of ancestral recipes that have stood the test of time.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Italians in Italy celebrate Christmas with a cultural richness and historical depth that is truly unique. While decorations adorn homes and town squares, the Italian celebration often revolves around Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. The solemnity of the occasion is followed by a festive Christmas Day feast, featuring regional specialties like tortellini in Bologna or Sicilian cassata.

In Italy, the emphasis is on the collective experience, with communities coming together for outdoor markets and intricate nativity displays. Panettone and pandoro, traditional Christmas cakes, take center stage, and the holiday season extends to Epiphany on January 6th, marked by the arrival of La Befana, a mythical gift-giving figure.
In essence, both Italian Americans and Italians in Italy share a deep appreciation for family, delicious food, and the joy of Christmas. While the traditions may differ, the spirit of the season remains a testament to the enduring cultural ties that define these rich and diverse celebrations. Whether gathered around a table in New York or Rome, the warmth of Italian Christmas transcends borders, uniting families in the magic of the holiday season.

in the United States, celebrated in communities across the US, and sometimes with presidential proclamations and congressional resolutions recognizing the profound contributions of Italian Americans to American society and culture. These declarations serve as a reminder of the diversity and richness of our nation's heritage and the importance of honoring the achievements of all communities.

In this blog post, we will explore the internment of Italian Americans during World War II, including the locations, dates, and the number of Italian Americans interned at each camp.

The internment of Italian Americans was rooted in the fear that they might have ties to Italy or be sympathetic to the Axis powers during World War II. Many Italian immigrants and their descendants were subjected to unjust treatment, including arrests, property seizures, and internment. Thousands of Italian Americans were detained in these camps, often separated from their families and communities.

The internment of Italian Americans during World War II stands as a somber reminder of the impact of wartime hysteria and prejudice. These internment camps, though lesser known than those for Japanese Americans, played a significant role in shaping the experiences of Italian Americans during this period. It is vital to remember and reflect upon this dark chapter in American history, including the significant number of Italian Americans who endured internment. This reflection is essential to ensure that such injustices are not repeated in the future. As a nation, we must strive to uphold the principles of liberty, justice, and equality for all, regardless of their ethnicity or background.

Unlocking Dual Citizenship - USA/Italy!

Are you an American of Italian heritage yearning to connect with your roots and enjoy the best of both worlds? Well, you're in luck! Italy offers a pathway to

          dual citizenship

, allowing you to become both an Italian and an American citizen. Here's a brief guide on how you can achieve this dream:

Italian Descent Confirmation: To qualify for Italian dual citizenship, you must prove your

          Italian lineage

. Typically, you need to trace your ancestry to an Italian-born ancestor. Gather documents like birth certificates, marriage certificates, and naturalization records to establish your connection.

Register Your Ancestry: Once you've collected the necessary documents, visit your

to begin the registration process. They will guide you through the required paperwork, which may vary slightly depending on your lineage.

Learn the Language: While not always mandatory, some

          regions

in Italy require applicants to demonstrate basic proficiency in the Italian language. Consider taking language courses to meet this requirement.

Residency in Italy: Some regions may require you to

          establish residency

within Italy, but others may not. Check with your consulate for specific requirements.

Patience is Key: Be prepared for a potentially lengthy process. Italian bureaucracy can be slow, but the reward is worth the wait.

Embrace Italian Culture: Immerse yourself in Italian culture, attend local events, and build connections. This will not only enrich your experience but also show your commitment to becoming an Italian citizen.

Remember, dual citizenship can provide you with the opportunity to enjoy the rich cultural heritage of Italy while still retaining your American citizenship. So, roll up your sleeves, gather your documents, and embark on the exciting journey to becoming a proud dual citizen of Italy and the USA.
Buona fortuna! (Good luck!)
And, while you may be waiting to achieve your dual citizenship, consider

Challenging Damaging Stereotypes: The Portrayal of Italian American Women in Media

In today’s world, it's alarming that hurtful

          stereotypes of Italian American women

continue to persist in the media. These outdated portrayals perpetuate negative misconceptions and can have far-reaching consequences, not only for the targeted group but for society as a whole. It's time we

          recognize the harm

caused by these stereotypes and work collectively to put an end to them.

The media plays a powerful role in shaping public perceptions. Unfortunately, Italian American women have often fallen victim to caricatures that paint them as overly aggressive, loud, and attached to outdated gender norms. These stereotypes are not only false but damaging, as they contribute to the erosion of self-esteem and hinder societal progress.

A glaring stereotype perpetuated is the portrayal of Italian American women as being overly controlling and aggressive. This not only distorts their roles within their families and communities but also perpetuates a perception that undermines their accomplishments and aspirations. Just consider the over-the-top stereotypes in network programming such as Mob Wives, Real Housewives of New Jersey, Jersey Shore, and many others.

          Such portrayals

undermine the diverse array of talents and ambitions Italian American women possess, spanning all fields from art and science to business and politics.

Media influences attitudes and beliefs, and these stereotypes contribute to systemic discrimination. When exposed to

          inaccurate portrayals

repeatedly, it is easier to marginalize and dismiss. The consequences are far-reaching: young girls might internalize these stereotypes, hindering their belief in their own potential, while others might engage in biased behaviors and discrimination without realizing it.

Enough is enough! Media creators, producers, and writers should prioritize accurate portrayals of Italian American women, showcasing their individuality, strength, and contributions to society. Audiences play a crucial role - by demanding more authentic representations and refusing to support media that perpetuates stereotypes.

Italian Immigration to the United States: A Historical Analysis

Italian immigration to the United States has played a significant role in shaping the cultural and social fabric of America. But what were the reasons behind the

          substantial influx of Italian immigrants

to the US and when did the key periods occur.

Economic Factors: A primary reason for the mass migration of Italians to the United States was the dire

          economic conditions in Italy

during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Widespread poverty, limited job opportunities, and low wages motivated many Italians to seek better prospects in America. The industrialization and rapid economic growth experienced by the United States during this period acted as a magnet, attracting Italian workers to industries such as mining, manufacturing, and construction.

Political and Social Instability: Political and social instability also contributed to the surge of Italian immigration. Italy faced numerous challenges, including a lack of political unity and economic disparities among its regions. The

          unification of Italy in 1861

and subsequent social unrest further prompted many Italians, especially from the south and Sicily, to seek a more stable and promising future in the United States. Italian immigrants were subjected to

          wide discrimination and denigration

in their new country, but they persevered and were proud to become Americans.

Chain Migration and Family Networks:

          Chain migration

played a crucial role in sustaining the flow of Italian immigrants to the United States. The initial wave of Italian migrants, often young men seeking employment, would establish themselves in American cities. Over time, they would sponsor family members, creating a network that facilitated further migration. This pattern of family-based immigration ensured a continuous stream of Italian newcomers to the United States.

Peak Immigration Years: The most

          significant waves of Italian immigration

occurred between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The largest influx took place between 1880 and 1920 when approximately 4 million Italians migrated to the United States. The peak years were between 1900 and 1914, with over 2.5 million Italian immigrants arriving during this period.

Conclusion: Italian immigration to the United States was driven by economic hardships, political instability, and the promise of better opportunities. The late 19th and early 20th centuries witnessed the most substantial waves of Italian migration, which left an indelible mark on American society.

We owe a debt to our ancestors who struggled to create a life in their new country. The Italian American One Voice Coalition ("IAOVC") is a great way to repay that debt by honoring and defending our great heritage.

Federal Judge declares IAOVC has standing to sue in West Orange Lawsuit over Columbus Monument
In September of 2020, during the height of the COVID pandemic, a team of IAOVC members along with volunteer attorneys and supporters gathered remotely to formulate a legal strategy to save Columbus monuments across America. This was in response to dozens, if not hundreds of requests from Italian Americans across the country to stop the attacks on our cultural heritage. If you were on social media frequently, as many of us were, you came across a common postings that read "Where are all the Italian Americans?" This was what many of us felt as we were witnesses to the destruction of our monuments. We could no longer wait for others to act and decided it was up to a small number of dedicated IAOVC members and

to take action. That is exactly what we did!

After years of watching Columbus monuments being vandalized and wrongfully removed,

the IAOVC decided enough was enough and filed the first landmark Federal lawsuit against West Orange NJ for the wrongful removal of a Columbus monument

which was revered in the West Orange NJ community.

Many in the community were fearful to bring lawsuits to reinstate Columbus monuments for fear of retaliation by local officials, a lack of funding or the amount of work required to take on such a task. We are proud to say that the IAOVC lead the way by filing the first landmark Federal lawsuit of its kind. As a result of this lawsuit, the community saw that it was possible to fight back legally to defend the civil rights of Italian Americans. Since we filed this lawsuit in September of 2020, other organizations followed our lead with great success.

We are extremely proud to report that the Federal court has just declared that IAOVC has standing to sue on behalf of its members.

THIS IS A WATERSHED MOMENT IN ITALIAN AMERICAN HISTORY!

We will keep everyone updated as more information becomes available.

America - The "Melting Pot"

          America is a country of

          great diversity

, with people from all over the world calling it home. Each group brings its own unique heritage, traditions, and culture, creating a rich tapestry that is the fabric of the American society. It is important for Americans to honor and defend their heritage, not only to preserve their cultural identity but also to maintain a sense of unity and mutual respect within the diverse population. Of course, we are Americans first, but we should respect our heritage.
The importance of heritage can be seen in its ability to provide a sense of belonging and identity. It connects people to their past, their ancestors, and their cultural roots. This is especially important for

          immigrants

, who often leave behind everything they know to start a new life in a foreign country. By honoring and preserving their heritage, they can maintain a connection to their roots while still embracing their new home.
Another reason why it is important to honor and defend heritage is that it promotes mutual respect and understanding among different groups of people. When people learn about each other's traditions and customs, they gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for one another. This understanding leads to a greater sense of empathy and tolerance, which can help to build stronger communities and a more cohesive society.
Heritage preservation is vital for future generations. By passing down cultural traditions and values, children and grandchildren develop a greater understanding and appreciation for their cultural roots. This instills a sense of pride and identity, helping to navigate the challenges of growing up in a complex and diverse society.
As a nation of immigrants, we should be mindful and respectful of each other's cultural heritage, recognizing the value it brings to our society as a whole.

Historic Loss for Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot – Her Columbus Statue Controversy

Mayor Lori Lightfoot is the first Chicago mayor in 40 years to lose re-election. Political pundits say that there are lots of contributing factors to this historic loss. Some say a very strong factor was her removal of the Columbus statues and some

They claimed that the mayor had offended them by removing the statue without consulting the community and by implying that Columbus was a symbol of racism and oppression, based on the fabricated

, the self-declared Marxist and anarchist who hated America and wanted to destroy it by attacking the underpinnings of Western Culture in his 1980 history book. For over 4 decades, The Zinn Education project continues to indoctrinate and brainwash students with his ant-American falsehoods and attacks on Columbus and other historic figures.

It is an insult not just to Italian Americans but also to American history to remove the Columbus statue based on false accusations against Columbus. Columbus is crucial figure in American history for his unprecedented achievement that united the continents and brought Western culture to this part of the world. He should be celebrated for his contributions to the country's founding.

Perhaps Lightfoot’s historic loss should be a warning to elected officials to not insult Italian American heritage and culture and stop perpetrating the falsehoods about Columbus.

passionate reaction was a sight to behold as tears streamed down his face during our National Anthem. They say that Italian Americans are a passionate and emotional people - Coach Sirianni certainly proved that last night! As we saw his raw emotions it was obvious that this was an incredibly special moment for him, as well as for all of us. And, although his team did not win, he won our hearts as a great example of an accomplished, passionate, proud and patriotic Italian American.
Super Bowl LVII was historic for many reasons, but that brief but notable moment coupled with his outstanding career accomplishments, made an important statement.
Italian Americans are portrayed in a

          stereotypical manner in the media

, being mostly depicted as mobsters, mafiosi, bimbos or buffoons. This reinforces negative and harmful perceptions about Italian Americans and perpetuates discrimination. But Sirianni's expression of passion and pride as well as bringing his team to the Super Bowl, challenges these harmful stereotypes and demonstrates that Italian Americans can excel in various fields and industries.
It's important for diverse communities to be represented in all aspects of society, including sports. This representation not only helps challenge harmful stereotypes but also inspires young people from underrepresented communities to pursue their dreams and see themselves in successful individuals.
Nick Sirianni's appearance in the Super Bowl, as an Italian American head coach, is a step forward in promoting positive representation and breaking down harmful stereotypes. The Italian American community should celebrate his achievement and continue to strive for representation in all industries. And although his Eagles didn't win, he surely won the hearts of everyone!

Italian American Stereotyping....

Italian Americans have long been subject to negative stereotypes in media, dating back to the

          early days of cinema

          . These

          stereotypes

, which often depict Italian Americans as mobsters, mafiosos, bimbos and buffoons, have had a damaging impact on the perception of Italian Americans and the way they are treated in society.

Research has shown that exposure to media representations can have real-world consequences – perception becomes reality!

Furthermore, these stereotypes reinforce harmful gender and racial biases. For example, Italian American women are often portrayed as passive and submissive, while Italian American men are depicted as aggressive and macho. These representations perpetuate harmful cultural norms and reinforce oppressive power structures.

Media should take steps to accurately and respectfully represent Italian Americans in their content. This includes avoiding harmful stereotypes and ensuring that Italian Americans are portrayed as fully realized human beings with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. By doing so, media producers can help to reduce prejudice and discrimination against Italian Americans and create a more inclusive and equitable media landscape for all.

IAOVC is dedicated to opposing Italian American stereotypes in media and has a successful and long record of defending Italian American heritage and culture.

The Italian American ONE VOICE Coalition (IAOVC) expressed deep disappointment and shock at the ignorant characterization of an elderly Italian American man on a recent episode of MasterChef Junior. IAOVC is calling on Mr. Bastianich to apologize publicly for promoting such a negative image of Italian American men. In a recent installment of the prime-time children’s cooking competition, Mr. Bastianich appeared in an open-chested jogging suit with a heavy gold chain perched o [...]

We do make a difference! Just look at how our efforts changed things big and small in 2014. In just one year we were able to educate those in the media and elsewhere about what it means to be an Italian American. We also put others on notice that we are watching and will no longer sit still when our heritage is attacked. Our biggest victory came following an inappropriate remark made by ‘Meet The Press’ host Chuck Todd. Soon after calling the race for Congress in S [...]

Cable Network A&E’s latest reality show that stereotypes and denigrates Italian Americans, “The Godfather of Pittsburgh,” has been cancelled after only 3 episodes. The show was targeted by the Italian American ONE VOICE Coalition, UNICO National and many Italian Americans. The show is replete with mob-inspired messaging and references to criminal activity and violence. “Godfather of Pittsburgh” follows Vince Isoldi, who operates several businesses includi [...]

I’m not surprised that an Italian American group has denounced the Nickelodeon movie ‘Nicky Deuce’. The head of the group calls it “racist”, which I don’t believe it to be; but insulting and demeaning: most definitely! And maybe I’ve reached the tipping point after not really having had any reaction at all to “Jersey Shore&rdquo [...]
