Group places De Niro on “Wall of Shame” for career dedicated to the stereotyping of Italian Americans NEW JERSEY—-Citing actor-director Robert De Niro’s never-ending effort to stereotype his heritage, the Italian American ONE VOICE Coalition—the nation’s largest Italian American Anti-Bias group, placed DeNiro on their “Wall of Shame,” following the release of his latest cinematic bomb, “The Family,” which portrays Italian Americans as mobsters, and buffoons. “There he goes again, stereotyping Italian Americans,” said ONE VOICE President Dr. Manny Alfano about De Niro. “While there is nothing funny about stereotyping anyone, we have a situation where life can imitate the movie, as we call upon De Niro to do us all a favor and put himself in the witness protection program so he can be stopped from stereotyping Italian Americans. He cannot help himself; he is a serial offender.” De Niro is the lead character in “The Family,” which is intended to be a quasi-humorous farce about the Manzoni family, a notorious mafia clan that is relocated to Normandy, France under the witness protection program, where they then proceed to act like criminals, blow up the local supermarket, beat up and terrify residents of the community. The movie was directed by Luc Besson, and also features Michelle Pfeiffer. “Another major film company has once again trotted out all the worn-out stereotypes of Italian Americans in ‘The Family’ while ignoring the positive accomplishments of Italian heritage,” Alfano said. “If it were any other nationality, it would be called bigotry, but when it comes to Italian Americans, it is all good fun and we are told to ‘lighten up.’” To view De Niro’s entry on the ONE VOICE “Wall of Shame,” please visit www.iaovc.org/wall-of-shame ONE VOICE is different from all other Italian American groups in that its sole mission is to fight bias, stereotyping and discrimination against Italian Americans.
